I am a Historian and Political Scientist with a focus on the Middle East and Global Islam. I am currently a Marie Curie Global Fellow at Stanford University and Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, leading a project on Sunni-Shii Relations in the Middle East.
I am a Professor at Nuffield College, a member of the leadership team of the British Election Study and I direct a research centre focusing on accountability, representation, British elections and political science communication beyond academia.
I am a Professor of Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford. I am also the Gillian Peele Fellow in Politics at Lady Margaret Hall.
My research interests are broadly centred on the relationship between political institutions and public policy outcomes, in areas such as education, healthcare, and the environment. Within this, my current work focuses primarily on three broad themes:
I’m primarily a historian of political thought. My two main areas of research are early modern political ideas and twentieth century intellectual history, especially the history of feminist politics and political theory.
