Oxford academics and alumni gather at ISA conference

The Department of Politics and International Relations was extremely well represented at this year’s annual convention of the International Studies Association (ISA), held in Baltimore, USA.

The convention is the preeminent event for scholars in the field of International Relations, and this year’s event saw over 5000 participants gather for a programme which included over 1000 and roundtable seminars. Over 40 students and staff from the Department of Politics and International Relations attended the event, and Oxford academics chaired and appeared on some of the convention’s most prestigious panels. The convention also provided the opportunity for the department’s large community of alumni and friends, who work in universities across the world, to reconnect with classmates and tutors, and DPIR hosted, alongside Oxford University Press, a reception for 100 alumni and distinguished friends of the department.

Professor Rosemary Foot, emeritus member of the Department of Politics and International Relations and one of the world’s leading scholars on the International Relations of Asia was honoured at a roundtable event. This was chaired by Andrew Hurrell, and brought together distinguished scholars from three different continents discuss and celebrate Professor Foot’s contributions to the advancement of International Relations scholarship.

Professor Foot is one of the world’s leading scholars on the International Relations of Asia, China’s foreign policy, its relationship with the United States, and institutional developments in Asia. Her numerous articles and monographs have uniquely contributed to the understanding of security issues in Asia, including human rights as well as the relationship between China, the United States and world order. A defining characteristic of her work is the combination of deep historical knowledge, a normatively driven research agenda, and extensive work on the ground. She continues to shape the field with important multidisciplinary work on how to study and understand China's resurgence in the world.

ISA is the largest international studies association in the world with over 7000 members. More information about ISA and the Baltimore conference is available at www.isanet.org/
