Work supported by the DPIR Research Support fund in the latest rounds of awards include:
Viviana Baraybar Hidalgo’s research on the spread and entrenchement of false information in the Peruvian Andes, focusing on the false narratives surrounding an attempted self-coup in December 2022 and the brutal state repression of the subsequent protests in December 2022 and January 2023. The Research Fund will allow Viviana to collect qualitative evidence from a series of interviews with journalists and leaders of social organisations in three cities in the south of Peru.
She said:
“I am grateful for this grant, which will enable me to gather crucial data for this emerging project. I'm also thrilled to begin fieldwork soon!"
Sam Ritholtz’s field research for his current monograph project on violence against LGBT populations during the Colombian civil war. More specifically, it will fund a trip to Colombia this January for exploratory research at a new field site in the country.
He said:
“Beginning this research in a new field site is a slow process as it requires close engagement with the local community and a trust that can only be developed after multiple visits. As such, I am extremely grateful that the department supports this kind of slow, in-depth research that does not yield immediate results, but does allow it to proceed safely and ethically.”
The Research Support Fund was launched in Michaelmas term 2022, providing small grants (up to £3,000 per award) for non-permanent academic or research staff to develop their research – or to provide pump-priming and completion of research initiatives, emergency research funding, or support dissemination of research impact or engagement activity.
This initiative, run by DPIR’s Research Facilitation Team, will repeat towards the end of each term.
Calls for applications to the DPIR Research Support Fund will be included in the fortnightly Research newsletter email. For further information on eligibility and the application process, please email the DPIR Research Facilitation Team.
