Tony Benn (1925-2014)

Date

Anthony Neil Wedgwood Benn (PPE 1942) has died at the age of 88. He was Labours longest serving MP, winning his first by-election as Labour candidate at the age of 25.

His friend, David Butler, said of him:

I met Tony in January when we were paired for economics tutorials in 1943 and we have been friends for 71 years, both intensely interested in politics, never quarrelling though seldom in agreement. He was a splendid friend, though there was a lot of difference between his public image and how he was to those who knew him well.
