Richard Caplan quoted in The i Paper over the future for Ukraine

DPIR's Professor of International Relations, Richard Caplan, has contributed to an article in The i Paper in which he discusses Volodymyr Zelensky's options for ending the war in Ukraine.

In 'Trump’s plan for Ukraine is taking shape – and it doesn’t look good for Zelensky', Richard highlights that Zelensky is less assured of US support under Trump. The article also states that Zelensky's self described 'victory plan' has been met with little enthusiasm from the West.

Professor Caplan has also said:

“It may be possible, through the use of positive and negative inducements, to bring the parties to the negotiating table but Russia is in a better position to resist such inducements".

The article also states that Vice President-elect JD Vance has floated the idea of a demilitarised zone at the existing front lines as part of any future peace plans, suggesting that it would be “heavily fortified” to prevent further Russian incursions. However, the zone would not be patrolled by American troops.

Professor Caplan is the Principal Investigator of the ESRC-funded project 'After Exit: Assessing the Consequences of United Nations Peacekeeping Withdrawal', which is investigating conditions on the ground in countries that have played host to large-scale UN peacekeeping operations in the five-year period following the closure of these operations. See the After Exit website for more details.
