Professor Rana Mitter presents a panel discussing central banks

Date

Rana Mitter presented a panel (27 May) at HowTheLightGetsIn, a philosophy and music festival at Hay on Wye, discussing the role and relative merits of central banks, particularly the Old Lady of Threadneedle St: the Bank of England. The talk was entitled The Old Ladys Crisis.

The Debate

The Bank of England encourages competition - except when it comes to its own dominance of monetary policy. Could it be that central control of banking is the real cause of financial crises, as Thatcher's economic guru Hayek argued? Is there a safer future in diversified central banks and currencies, or would this be a recipe for chaos?

The Panel

Capitalism 4.0 author Anatole Kaletsky, HBSC Chief Economist Stephen D. King and philosopher Jamie Whyte debate the Old Lady's monopoly.
