Professor Alan Ryan comments further on UK and US higher education

Date

Alan Ryan published a comment article in The Times Higher Education (8 March) comparing UK and US higher education.

Commenting on the current row over higher education in the US, Alan writes that the two countries are alike in so far as many people think higher education is a waste of time, but always for other peoples children, not their own.

For Alan, the two systems of higher education are likely to influence each other: for example, a similar scheme to the UK system of student finance will most likely be adopted in the US soon. In other ways, he says, the two systems remain as far apart as ever and, since higher education has become a hot political issue, a great deal may depend on who wins the upcoming presidential race.
