Patricia Owens to join DPIR

The Department is delighted to announce that Patricia Owens will join us from July 2020 as Professor of International Relations.


Prof Owens is currently Professor of International Relations at the University of Sussex. Her research focuses on historical international relations and political and international thought.

Her books include Between War and Politics and Economy of Force, which won both the Susan Strange Prize for the Best Book in International Studies and the International Studies Association Theory Section Best Book Award.

Currently, Prof Owens is Director of the four-year Leverhulme Trust Research Project, ‘Women and the History of International Thought’, which she will bring to Oxford. Focusing on Britain and the United States in the 20th century, the project is first sustained attempt to write women back into the history of international thought and the academic discipline of International Relations.

As well as her work in the Department, Prof Owens will also be a Fellow of Somerville College.
