John Lloyd asks: Where is Russia Headed?

Date

In a new article for Reuters, John Lloyd draws on his experiences and observations from a recent conference he attended to probe Russias future.

He notes that many Russian scholars and analysts are divided over where the country is headed, including over fundamental questions such as what should be Russias role in Eastern Europe and the broader international community in the post-Soviet era.

John concludes, [Russia] needs an administration that eschews the search for a fake unity, but instead seeks support from varied groups for good governance. It needs more space for a genuinely independent civil society, in which institutions have autonomy recognized and protected, by a state that does not attempt to quash them. This is where Russia must go: towards democracy.
