Dr Rasmus Kleis Nielsen on the problems of news start-ups in Western Europe

A study co-authored by Dr Rasmus Kleis on online news websites in Western Europe was reviewed in the Columbia Journalism Review (19 April, 2012) and Journalism.co.uk (20 April, 2012).

The study found that news start-ups are showing a lot of growth and experimentation but most of them cannot yet cover their operating costs. The challenges facing Western European start-ups are similar to the ones facing American websites except for economies of scale among top American sites and the greater strength of the competition to news start-ups in Western Europe: newspapers and broadcasters.

The study analyzes cases from Germany, France, and Italy.
