Dr Christine Cheng awarded John Fell Small Grant for project on Somali pirates and Mexican drug cartels

Date

Dr Christine Cheng has been awarded a John Fell Small Grant for the project Extralegal Groups in Weak and Failing States: Examining Somali Pirates and Mexican Drug Cartels.

This study examines how the emergence and development of extralegal groups (nascent organized crime groups) in weak and failing states can undermine statebuilding efforts and set some countries on a path of long-term corruption. The project focuses on two types of extralegal groups: Somali pirates and Mexican drug cartels. By understanding their emergence, development, and entrenchment in their local political economies, this study will contribute to current debates on state formation, organized crime, and corruption.
