Departmental Lecturer in Russian and East European Politics Marnie Howlett is part of a new interdisciplinary Hub focusing on uniting expertise at Oxford with international researchers and practitioners working on issues related to Ukraine.
The Oxford Ukraine Hub (OUH) is one of three new hubs fronted by academics in the Social Sciences Division to be awarded £40,000 this month. Its goal is to create opportunities for interdisciplinary research that is both public facing and policy relevant in the UK and beyond.
The OUH is led by Dr Howlett, Professor Polly Jones (Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages), Dr Ievgenia Kopytsia (Faculty of Law), Dr Jonathon Turnbull (School of Geography and the Environment), Dr Zbigniew Wojnowski (Oxford School of Global and Area Studies/Faculty of History) (PI), Dr Pany Xenophontos (Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages), and Yevhen Yashchuk (Faculty of History/Oxford University Ukrainian Society).
Key outputs from the OUH will include a workshop series, a podcast, and the development of an open access ‘Global Ukraine’ website and interdisciplinary course.
The OUH also creates capacity for new cross-disciplinary research opportunities, securing additional grants, leveraging policy impact, and broadening public engagement within the UK and beyond, which is critical given Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for independence.
Dr Howlett said:
“The Oxford Ukraine Hub is an incredibly important and timely initiative as Ukrainians continue their existential fight against Russian aggression.
“By bringing together scholars working on Ukraine-related topics at Oxford and institutions across the UK, Europe, North America, and Ukraine, we hope to foster new research collaborations and integrate the study of Ukraine into university curricula."
