DPIR research associate in international relations Hussam Hussein has had a letter published in the journal Science in which - together with his co-author Benjamin Schuetze - he remarks on Morocco’s ambitious green hydrogen projects.
In the letter, he warns that the country’s projects may benefit Europe more than Morocco itself, particularly in terms of energy resources and local environmental impact.
He suggests that Morocco’s energy initiatives would be more effective if they focused on direct local benefits rather than prioritising exports.
The key message he hopes to convey is the importance of urging a balanced, locally-focused approach to energy development. He argues that Morocco and its neighbours should prioritise renewable energy projects that deliver immediate benefits to their communities, not just exports.
Hussam said:
“It’s an honour to contribute to a global conversation on sustainable energy through Science.
“This platform allows us to share concerns about equitable and truly sustainable energy solutions with a broad, engaged audience.”
Hussam is currently working on the political economy of natural resources in the Middle East and North Africa, especially transition to renewable energy and transboundary water governance. His work at DPIR has been focusing on investigating the political economy of natural resources in the MENA region.
