DPIR’S Dr Hussam Hussein comments in Nature journal on Western science diplomacy.

DPIR research associate in international relations Dr Hussam Hussein has had a letter published in the journal Nature on the subject of Western science diplomacy.

In the letter, co-authored with Dr Abdullah Awad, they argue that Western science diplomacy commonly unintentionally reinforces existing global power imbalances: hence, they call for a change to a more inclusive approach, acknowledging historical biases, and viewing all states as equal partners.

The primary message they hope to get across is that Western science diplomacy should prioritise genuine, global collaboration and approaches, giving equal respect to all countries and initiatives, while actively supporting humanitarian needs globally, not selectively.

Dr Hussein said:

“Being published in Nature is a meaningful opportunity.

“It allows our message to reach an influential, global audience, opening doors for conversations on reforming science diplomacy practices toward more fairness and inclusivity.”

Dr Hussein’s work at DPIR had been centred on science diplomacy, taking natural resources in the MENA region as a starting point.
