DPIR to host OxUNA panel: Careers in the UN discussion

Date

DPIR is delighted to host the Oxford University United Nations Association (OxUNA (in collaboration with the Oxford University Careers Service)) to the Manor Road Lecture Theatre on Tuesday 15 October from 6pm for a discussion of career paths in the UN with a panel from the British Association of Former United Nations Civil Servants (BAFUNCS).

The panel will be led by Stephen Rudgard: latterly the Country Representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to Indonesia and to Laos and currently coordinating FAO’s work with other agriculturally-focused UN agencies as an expert in its Partnership Division.

Also on the panel are Sam Daws: formerly First Officer to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and currently an Associate Member of the Department of Politics and International Relations researching ways to improve resilience and foresight in the UN System; and Tomoko Nishimoto: formerly an Assistant Director General in the International Labour Organization (ILO), who also held a range of positions over 30 years in UNDP, UNICEF and UNEP across three continents.

The panellists, representing a wide range of educational backgrounds, professional backgrounds, and career paths, will discuss what led them and their colleagues to join the UN, the developments in their careers and skills that followed, and the opportunities that have become available to them through their service.

The structured discussion will conclude at approximately 6.45pm, with about 30 minutes dedicated to questions from the audience to the panel, to be followed by a reception hosted by DPIR that will conclude at 8pm.
