His fellowship is one of 12 awarded under the Young Academy for Sustainability Research at the University of Freiburg and is funded by the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation.
FRIAS is the University of Freiburg’s international research college and the institute supports innovative research projects through individual fellowships and group formats.
Hussam is a Lecturer in International Relations and Oxford Martin School’s Fellow in Transboundary Resources Management. His expertise is on water politics, and on supporting a transformation towards a sustainable use of water resources in arid and semi-arid regions.
Hussam said of this fellowship: “I am very pleased to be able to work with fellow scholars from different disciplines and regions to design new interdisciplinary projects and research directions able to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
“We often tend to work in disciplinary silos; this opportunity will push us to work across disciplines adopting holistic solutions.”
