Department academics comment on implications of Scottish Independence

Date

Professor Iain McLean and Professor Jeremy Waldron have both appeared in the newspapers recently, commenting on the implications of Scottish Independence.

Iain McLean wrote a piece for The Guardian (23 February) entitled 'Scottish Independence Day on 24 March 2016? That sounds like a wildly optimistic notion', in which he argues that, whatever the result of the vote, multiple uncertainties make an 18 month timetable virtually impossible.

Jeremy Waldron wrote a letter to The Times in which he suggested that if Scotland were to secede “there will be no United Kingdom. What will be left is the Kingdom of England and the province of Ulster.”

Professor Ian McLean is Professor of Politics, Official Fellow, Nuffield College
