Since winning the Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2021 Dr Janina Dill has been working on a research project about the moral psychology of war, detailed below:
Can morality and law restrict war? Millions of people globally rely on an affirmative answer for their safety. Yet, war presents a unique challenge to law and morality. When leaders make decisions about whether to use force, the consequences of this choice are often impossible to predict.
Dr Janina Dill’s research explores how moral principles influence soldiers’ decision making in war and how they shape the attitudes of civilians affected by conflict.
Her work will help better understand how rules for the conduct of war, including the laws of war, must be articulated to be an instrument of morality.
