Physical activity and time spent in nature are essential for overall wellbeing. At the University of Oxford, we encourage staff and students to take advantage of the many open spaces, green areas, and activity groups available to support physical health and mental clarity.

Explore Oxford’s Green Spaces

The university is home to some truly remarkable outdoor spaces, perfect for relaxation, reflection, and gentle movement:

  • University of Oxford Botanic Garden – Established in 1621, this is the oldest botanic garden in Great Britain and one of the oldest scientific gardens in the world. With over 5,000 plant species, it offers a tranquil environment ideal for a mindful walk or a peaceful break from daily routines. Entry is free with your university card.
  • Harcourt Arboretum – Located just six miles south of Oxford, this 150-acre arboretum provides a stunning natural setting for a restorative walk. With its mix of ancient woodland, wildflower meadows, and magnificent trees, it’s a wonderful escape into nature. Entry is free with your university card.
  • Parks and Open Spaces – Oxford is rich in green spaces, from University Parks to Christ Church Meadow and Port Meadow. These are excellent places to walk, run, or simply take a moment to unwind, whether during lunch breaks or in your free time. These are all open to the public.
