Maya Gavin
I am a DPhil student in Political Theory at Christ Church and the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.
My research examines the canonisation of critical theories in late-20th century US academia. I trace the ‘industries of thought’ that emerged around poststructural thinkers in the 1970s to explore the tension between critique and its own canonisation. My work draws on intellectual history and the sociology of knowledge to analyse canon-formation as an intellectual-institutional process, focusing on the role of journals, departmental programmes and funding bodies.
My DPhil is generously supported by the Christ Church Politics Scholarship in partnership with the Department of Politics & International Relations (DPIR). Previously, I completed my MPhil in Political and Economic Sociology and BA in Human, Social and Political Sciences (HSPS) at the University of Cambridge. My MPhil and undergraduate research examined how changing international research funding models over the last 20 years have re-shaped academic environments and research culture. For this work, I was awarded the 2021 John Dunn Prize.
