Alex Baxter
MA (Hons) Edin
I am a first-year in the MPhil International Relations program and a member of Lincoln College. My primary research interest is investigating the effects of changes in national identity on countries' diplomatic and defence policies, specifically in the case of the UK in the post-Brexit era; I also maintain broader interests in constructivist structural IR theory and International Political Economy.
I come from a Scottish and English background but have spent time living in Australia, Ireland, Germany, and the United States as well as the UK. Before Oxford, I completed an MA (Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Edinburgh, with an exchange year at the University of Pennsylvania; my undergraduate dissertation investigated the influence of national and governmental identity on UK nuclear weapons policy in the 2010s. I have furthermore interned in policy research positions in Westminster and Holyrood.
Outside of my studies, I am the Opinion Editor of the St Antony's International Review (STAIR), having previously held columns in student newspapers at Edinburgh and Penn alongside freelancing elsewhere. I cover international affairs and student politics. I also hold committee positions in Oxford's International Relations Society and Lincoln's MCR.
