Equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are fundamental to Oxford’s mission and achievements as a university. The excellence of our research and teaching, along with the impact of our global engagement, is rooted in the culture and community we cultivate together.
Here within the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) we share this mission as we are dedicated to fostering equality and diversity within an inclusive working and learning environment that respects the rights and dignity of all staff and students. Equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are central to our mission, and we collectively strive to ensure that everyone can be their authentic selves and feel a true sense of belonging. This aligns with the collegiate University EDI Strategic Plan 2024-27 which outlines the vision, objectives, values and targets for Oxford’s EDI efforts
In 2025, DPIR celebrates its 25th year anniversary, and we are proud to showcase the profiles of some our women, via our women in DPIR webpages.
As part of our commitment to advancing gender equality specifically and improving the working environment, we are actively preparing to apply for an Athena Swan Bronze Award. This involves conducting a comprehensive self-assessment and implementing meaningful changes.
To drive this initiative, we have established an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, which reports to the General Purposes Committee (GPC). This committee, with representation from across the department, is responsible for developing and implementing initiatives as part of developing our Athena Swan action plan while also enhancing EDI more broadly.
We recognise that fostering an inclusive environment is an ongoing journey. While we are still in the early stages of this vital work and have much to learn, we remain committed to building a truly diverse and inclusive community where everyone feels valued and respected.
Why does this impact you?
EDI serves as a catalyst for cultural and attitudinal change. By utilising feedback mechanisms such as surveys, we continuously assess, refine, and enhance our policies and practices to ensure that equality, diversity, and inclusion are embedded in the daily operations of the department.
We are currently:
- Introducing social activities to strengthen the department’s sense of community.
- Embedding EDI training for new faculty and for those who either support undergraduate interviews (e.g., by organising or assisting with the process) or directly participate as members of interview panels.
- Ensuring that EDI is discussed and considered throughout the recruitment process, including during decision-making.
- Launching an initiative to diversify and ‘decolonise’ our curricula, with the support of graduate students.
