"Will the UK Referendum Irreparably Damage Europe?" - Gwendolyn Sasse responds

Gwendolyn Sasse is part of an expert panel responding to a question set by Carnegie Europe's Strategic Europe blog - "Will the UK Referendum Irreparably Damage Europe?"

In response, Gwen argues: "The biggest damage has been done to British politics and society, and whatever the result of the June 23 referendum on the UK’s EU membership, it is unclear whether and how this damage can be repaired."

"Without the UK referendum, the EU would not look particularly strong at the moment either. But a Brexit vote - and perhaps already the precedent of such a referendum - is likely to inspire other member states to pursue similar paths. This would chip away at the EU’s internal and external legitimacy and strengthen populism in and across member states."
