Walter Ladwig on Indias Asian policy

Date

Walter Ladwig, an Oxford student reading for his DPhil in international relations, published an opinion-piece on Indias Asian policy in The Wall Street Journal Asia (January 26, 2012).

Walter writes, Indias Look East Policy, initiated more than two decades ago to connect with the dynamic economies of the Asia-Pacific, has made at best fitful progress.

India has signed a number of free trade agreements and initiated a number of new defense initiatives with her Asia-Pacific neighbours. These initiatives have been welcomed at a time when traditional European and American markets are in crisis and Chinas rise is threatening to upset the fragile balance of power in the region. However, much remains to be done.

Walter suggests ways in which Indias turn to the east can be more fruitfully transformed into a deep engagement in economic and security issues with other countries.
