Congratulations to Dr Varun Uberoi, who has received an ESRC Post Doctoral Fellowship for the period of October 2009 to September 2010.
Varun has won an ESRC Post Doctoral Fellowship which he will use to turn his D.Phil into a book that Palgrave Macmillan will publish. Spanning political theory and political science the book examines the theory and practice of fostering unity amongst the culturally diverse citizens of modern polities. His theoretical work examines what unity amongst the citizens of a polity is, how it differs from similar ideas like belonging, solidarity and loyalty, why such unity is important and how it can be fostered ethically. His empirical work utilises archival research and elite interviews to examine how the governments of two parliamentary democracies, Britain and Canada, have attempted to foster such unity.
