Tahrat Naushaba Shahid wins best paper for Sexual equality in family laws for Muslims in Bangladesh: A fear of change

Congratulations to Tahrat Naushaba Shahid, who has won the prize for best paper presented at the 28th British Association of South Asian Studies (BASAS) Annual Conference 2014, held on 2nd - 4th April at Royal Holloway, University of London.


Tahrat writes about the politics of Islam through the lens of family law for Muslim women in Bangladesh. Her winning paper was titled Sexual equality in family laws for Muslims in Bangladesh: A fear of change, based on a chapter of her DPhil dissertation, and is currently under consideration for publication in the BASAS 2014 special issue of the journal Contemporary South Asia.

Ian Talbot, Professor of Modern British History at the University of Southampton, presented the award on the final evening of the conference, after a panel of judges comprising the conference organisers and council members made their decision based on papers and presentations.
