Sudhir Hazareesingh has written an article for the Wednesday 22 March edition of Le Monde on the French presidential campaign, arguing that, "Fertile en rebondissements, la campagne présidentielle est non moins turbulente sous l’angle des idées" (for all its unexpected developments, the presidential campaign is no less turbulent when seen through the lens of ideas).
Sudhir's article focusses on the ideas and programmes of the main candidates, arguing that the election has seen a strong emphasis on the theme of "rupture", and the emancipation of candidates from their respective party machines. He also highlights the importance of outside intellectual influences (a relatively new phenomenon in France), and the emergence of a new cleavage between open and closed conceptions of France's future, symbolised respectively by Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen.
