Sir Ivor Roberts reflects on decision to invade Iraq, 10 years on

Date

On the occasion of the 10 year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, Ivor Roberts writes in The Tablet (20 April) that the war was launched under false pretences and must be considered unjust.

Ivor, who a decade ago supported the invasion while serving as UK ambassador to Italy, has since dramatically reversed his views. At the time, I believed that the war was, on balance, just, Ivor writes. But in the intervening decade, as more material has emerged, it has become increasingly clear that it was not only unjust but also immoral and illegal as well.

Ivor argues that by almost any measure of what constitutes a just war including just cause, right intention, last resort, and proportionality the conflict in Iraq fails to meet the necessary threshold.
