Sir Ivor Roberts on Aung San Suu Kyi visit

Sir Ivor Roberts penned a comment piece in The Tablet (30 June, 2012) on Aung San Suu Kyis recent visit to Oxford to finally receive the honorary degree she has been awarded 19 years ago.


Sir Ivor said the inner calm and beauty were much in evidence again last week as the years rolled back and Aung San Suu Kyi recalled her happy youth in Oxford. She said that she had learnt at Oxford to respect all that is best in human civilisation and that this had helped her ito cope with what was not quite the best.

Sir Ivor discusses the challenges facing Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma especially when the decision-making of Burmas generals defies predictability.
