Sandeep Sengupta, a doctoral candidate in international relations at Oxford University, co-authored a study that suggests that despite India’s impressive rise, it still faces too many developmental challenges to qualify for super power status. The study is reviewed in The Hindu (7 March).
Despite impressive economic and political succes and an attractive image abroad, the study concludes that entrenched divisions of caste, the emergence of new inequalities in wealth distribution, and embedded nepotism and corruption and environmental costs will continue to keep superpower status away from India’s reach.
