Professor Rana Mitter talks about the latest Chinese anti-corruption drive

Date

Rana Mitter appeared on BBC Radio 4s The World At One programme (24 July), discussing the wider context behind Chinese governments recent allegations that executives from multinational pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline have been guilty of large-scale bribery and fraud within China.

Rana said that "we're in the cross-hairs of two big campaigns from the new Chinese leadership that took over just a few months ago. One is a huge crackdown on official corruption (...) The other problem (...) is that there is this increasing question of a growing healthcare budget that the Chinese state has to manage."

He goes on to comment that the widespread lack of transparency and perceived corruption in business and local government is something that everybody on every street corner talks about a great deal.
