Professor Rana Mitter talks on the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen protests

Date

Rana Mitter has appeared on BBC Radio 4s Today programme (3 June) to discuss the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen protests.

Rana talked about how, even with a certain amount of state censorship, Chinese social media sites like Weibo allow Chinese citizens the kind of forum for open discussion that the protesters on 3 June 1989 could only have dreamed of.

The programme is available here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04581j7 (Rana appears at 2h 40m).

Rana will also be discussing whether China can move on from 1989, and whether it do so without coming to terms with the events in Tiananmen Square, on BBC Radio 3 tonight: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b045bzjf
