Professor Rana Mitter comments on reform efforts of Chinas new leadership

An article in China Daily (14 May) summarizing international China experts assessments of the reform agenda of new Chinese Premier Li Keqiang includes the views of Oxfords Rana Mitter.


While many of the experts noted that the reforms appear to be headed in the right direction, it is too soon to tell what the ultimate effects will be. One important factor that will greatly affect these [reform] policies is transparency, Rana said. A very strong and positive move is needed to provide much greater transparency for the actions of the government and its agencies. Without that, the reforms run the danger of sounding good but not having much effect.
