Professor Rana Mitter comments on Chinas relationship with Ukraine

Rana Mitter was quoted in an article (27 February) on the Financial Times' 'Beyond BRICS' blog, entitled 'Ukraine, a setback in China's eastern Europe strategy'. The article explores how $8 billion in Chinese investment and loan pledges for Ukraine could be seen to be in jeopardy.

I dont see that this development is likely to change Chinas investment policy very much, he said. It seems to me that China does not have the ideological commitment that Russia has to a particular view of Ukraine. He added: Chinas major issue these days is to encourage other countries to serve its security and trade interests, not to pay much attention to the form of those governments per se.
