Professor Marc Stears discusses Liberal Party leader Jo Grimond

Date

Marc Stears discussed Liberal Party leader Jo Grimond on the Sunday Supplement programme of BBC Radio Wales (27 May, 2012).

Marc said “the Liberal Party looked as if it was going into extinction at the time Jo Grimmond took over. He repositioned it, he gave it new life, he gave it a whole set of new ideas.

According to Marc, Jo staked out a position between state-centred and market-centred solutions: “[There is] more to life than just the state and the free market; there is something in-between which we may just call society. There are places where people get together themselves to look after themselves, sometimes with the help of government, sometimes not.”

Marc discusses the eclectic sources of Grimond’s ideas, his concerns and how he may be relevant again in the Labour Party today.
