Professor Iain McLean discusses the upcoming debate in the House of Lords on civil partnerships and religious liberty

Date

Professor Iain McLean published an article at OurKingdom (the UK section of openDemocracy) on the question of civil partnerships and religious liberty.

Iain claimed that despite the removal of the ban on celebrating civil partnerships on religious premises, exceptional access to the House of Lords by Christian conservatives have allowed them to use a procedural device to force a debate on the issue on December 15th. A conservative victory on this date would turn back the clock. This would overturn the will of parliament and all three parties which support section 202 of the Equality Act 2010.

Iain calls for Parliament to pass regulations that specify who has the right to register premises for civil partnerships, and who has the right to object.
