Professor Giovanni Capoccia Awarded John Fell OUP Research Fund

Date

Professor Giovanni Capoccia has been awarded the John Fell OUP Research Fund: Small Award Scheme, for his project Measuring Political Repression in Advanced Democracies: A Study of Western Europe`.

The purpose of Giovanni`s project is to compare different regional patterns and temporal trends in how Western European democracies have controlled political extremism. The analysis includes sixteen countries and covers the period between 1920 and the present. The funding from the John Fell Fund will help complete the data coding and produce a machine-readable dataset. This, in turn, will offer the basis for a full comparative and longitudinal analysis of patterns and trends of repression in Western Europe, which will complement the first thematic analyses which are now in progress. The main result of the project will be a monograph, Militant Democrats, under contract with Johns Hopkins University Press.

Professor Giovanni Capoccia is Professor of Comparative Politics, CUF University Lecturer and Fellow at Corpus Christi College. His Defending Democracy (Baltimore 2005) was recently awarded the APSA Award for the Best Book in European Politics.
