Professor David Anderson comments on the African Unions decision not to back the Libyan NTC

Date
David Anderson appeared on an edition of Inside Story on Al Jazeera TV on 28 August, entitled Is the African Union still backing Gaddafi? The programme featured a discussion on why the African Union recently chose not to recognise the National Transitional Council (NTC) in Libya, even though rebel forces have claimed to have control of Libyas capital city.

David acknowledged a point made by another commentator on the programme, that Gaddafi was instrumental in the inception of the African Union a little over 10 years ago, but he added that even though it is a relatively young organisation it has matured enormously in the past few years. However, David also acknowledged that the current situation presents a dilemma for the AU, because Gaddafi has supported many liberations in Africa. David suggested that that sense of Liberation Brotherhood is one of the strongest political ideologies in the continent.

The full programme can be seen here (Davids comments begin at about 9 mins in).
