Professor David Anderson on the British stain of torture during Mau Mau rebellion

Date

David Anderson was quoted in an article by the Daily Telegraph (1 November) on Kenyas prime minister, Raila Odinga, urging David Cameron to compensate the surviving victims of torture carried out during the British colonial era.

David was quoted as describing the Mau Mau uprising as the bloodiest chapter of Britains retreat from Empire in Africa, claiming about 25,000 lives.

He also stated that the fact that the colonial administration used torture was beyond question, and the attempts of various people in Britain to minimise this is laughable.

He warned that if the compensation case goes to trial, youre going to get two full weeks every day of detailed descriptions of tortures carried out by British officials.
