New book on Russian politics by DPIR’s Paul Chaisty and Stephen Whitefield launched

A new book by DPIR’s Paul Chaisty and Stephen Whitefield charting the evolution of Russian politics - How Russians Understand the New Russia | Princeton University Press – is set to be launched next month.

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 reshaped Russia’s borders and introduced a hybrid political economy that balanced markets and democracy with state intervention and authoritarianism.

In How Russians Understand the New Russia – published by Princeton University Press - Paul and Stephen argue that this system initially stabilised public opinion but later faced challenges as territorial shifts disrupted support.

The book will be launched at a special event at the Old Fellows’ Dining Room at the Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre, St Antony’s College at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 13 May.

Refreshments will be served and copies of the book will be on sale at the discount price of £20.

Speaking about the launch, Paul said:

“We’re grateful to Princeton University Press and the Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre at St Antony’s for organising this event and look forward to launching the book in the UK.”
