In memoriam

Date

The Department has learned with sadness of the recent death of Michael Vinay Bhatia, who was killed in Afghanistan. Michael was a very promising and much liked doctoral student in international relations.

His supervisor, Neil MacFarlane, said: Michael was a very gifted researcher. He combined great theoretical and methodological creativity with an extremely disciplined and exhaustive approach to sources. His enthusiasm for his project was infectious. He combined his doctoral work with prolific research and publishing activity across a wide range of themes, including terrorism, small arms, intervention, humanitarian action, and peace-building. In all of that work, he endeavoured to deepen our understanding of processes of conflict and the ways of resolving it. This reflected not only academic interest, but personal commitment to improving the lives of people affected by war. He will be missed, not only by his college, but also by his many friends among us.

You may wish to read an article in memory of Michael, published on the Watson Institute for International Studies website.

St. Antony`s College will be holding a celebration of Michael`s life on Friday 16 May at 6:00 p.m. in the College Buttery. All are welcome.
