Le Mythe Gaullien

Date

Published in Paris by Les Editions Gallimard.

Le Mythe Gaullien explores how and why General de Gaulle has become an iconic figure in contemporary France, and what this idealization tells us about French political culture, and in particular the changing character of political heroism. The book coincides with current French celebrations of the Resistance, notably the 70th anniversary of de Gaulles BBC broadcast of 18 June 1940. A link to the Gallimard poster can be found here.

The book has been reviewed in the French weekly lExpress and the daily Le Figaro. Sudhir has also made a number of appearances on French radio and television to discuss his book, including on Europe 1s Cest arriv demain and the France 3 news programme 7 Voir, where he debated de Gaulles political heritage with French Budget Minister Franois Baroin and the neo-Gaullist parliamentarian Nicolas Dupont-Aignan.

Sudhir Hazareesingh is CUF University Lecturer in Politics and Tutorial Fellow in Politics, Balliol College.
