John Lloyd on the rise and fall of British tabloids

Date

John Lloyd published an article in the Financial Times (14 April, 2012) on the effects of the Leveson Inquiry on British tabloids.

John examines the century-long history domination of the tabloids on the British news market, and the arguments in defence of the popular press that emerged in the Inquiry.

But, he says, their importance is not so much their veracity: it is that they express an implicit confidence that they matter, that they are at the centre of the national story in a way popular newspapers elsewhere are not.

He goes on to consider the manner in which the Inquiry is likely to impact the tabloids in the future at a time of rising personal and monetary costs for their owners.
