Indian Foreign Secretary stresses economic development, talks tough on Pakistan, diplomatic on China

Date

Speaking to an overflowing audience at the Department, India`s Foreign Secretary, Nirupama Rao, repeatedly returned to the theme of India`s economic interests in her lecture on Friday 30 October.

The substantive and suave presentation contained some tough words for India`s neighbour Pakistan, in the context of the aftermath of the attack on Mumbai a year ago. However, the Foreign Secretary, who is known for her expertise on China-India relations, adopted a far more accommodative stance towards China, playing down recent reports of conflict over the border disputes between India and China.

After her lecture Mrs Rao fielded a large number of questions from the audience with equal poise, including a challenge on India`s dealings with Burma`s military junta. She later met and talked to students and faculty at a reception hosted by the Department.

The event was chaired by Professor Richard Caplan, Director of the Centre for International Studies.

A podcast of her lecture will be available shortly at
