ELACs new working group on the global governance of nuclear technology

Date

Since 1945, the spread and control of nuclear weapons has posed one of the greatest challenges to international security. How these weapons are managed and governed is key to understanding and confronting this challenge, and the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC) is launching a new working group to explore the complexities of a problem that refuses to go away.

The ELAC Nuclear Research Working Group plans to host a research seminar series in academic year 2012/13. This will be an inter-disciplinary discussion group on the multi-faceted challenges the emergence and proliferation of nuclear weapons have posed to international security since 1945. Seminars will cover a broad range of topics within the nuclear field, including the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the challenges posed by the so-called Nuclear Renaissance, the politics of nuclear safeguards and disarmament, as well as questions related to nuclear deterrence and emerging forms of trans-national and inter-regional nuclear governance.

The aim is to facilitate discussion and the sharing of research on the most cutting-edge nuclear-related issues amongst academics, policy makers, and practitioners. Events will be open to researchers from different disciplines, including international relations, public policy, international law, history, philosophy, physics, energy and environmental studies. Researchers who wish to present at the seminar are encouraged to submit a short abstract of their work (250 words max.) to the seminar coordinators:

  • Dr Nicola Horsburgh (nicola.horsburgh[at]sant.ox.ac.uk)
  • Francesca Giovannini (francesca.giovannini[at]politics.ox.ac.uk)
  • Dr Kate Sullivan (kate.sullivan[at]area.ox.ac.uk)

More information will appear here and on the ELAC events pages when available.
