Sudhir Hazareesingh has been quoted in a book review in the New York Times (3 February) that discusses the popularity in France of books about the decline of the West in general , and France in particular.
Sudhir argues that claims of French "decline" used to be articulated within a counter-Enlightenment intellectual framework, but in recent decades the argument has become much more wide-ranging, touching on France's economic performance, as well as the failure of its social institutions; it also feeds into ongoing debates about French national identity.
