Dr Rogier Creemers comments on China's proposed Social Credit System

Date

Rogier Creemers has been quoted in an article for the New Scientist (14 October) about a scheme in China that will link up personal data held by banks, e-commerce sites and social networks.

“It isn’t just about financial creditworthiness,” he says. “All that behaviour will be integrated into one comprehensive assessment of you as a person, which will then be used to make you eligible or ineligible for certain jobs, or social services.”

But he also adds, “Pretty much anything China does makes people panicked, and many times we don’t recognise that we are doing similar things.”
