Dr Peter Bajomi-Lazar advises House of Commons committee

Date

Dr Peter Bajomi-Lazar, Senior Research Fellow with the ERC-funded project on Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe gave oral evidence to the Political and Constitutional Reform Committee earlier this month at a session on Mapping the path to codifying or not codifying the UKs constitution.

The Committee was set up by the House of Commons in June 2010 to consider political and constitutional reform and to scrutinize the work of the Deputy Prime Minister in this area. The purpose of the evidence session Peter attended on 7 July was to consider some examples of major constitutional change that have taken place or are about to take place in other European countries. In some cases, this has been the creation of an entirely new constitution, and in some a significant reform of the existing constitution.

Peter was invited to testify on the drafting of the new Hungarian Constitution and its adoption process, as well as the controversies the new base law has provoked. Other witnesses were Sophie Boyron (University of Birmingham, speaking on the French Constitution) and Dr Bill Kissane (LSE, on Ireland and Turkey).
