Dr Patricia Thornton comments on the significance of Bo Xilais ousting for Chinas New Left

Patricia Thornton was quoted in The Washington Post (13 April, 2012) on the significance for Chinas emerging new left of Bo Xilais being ousted from government.


Talking about the challenge of the new Left to China’s power structures, Patricia said, “the real concern in Beijing is that the links here are unpredictable, difficult to gauge and largely underground.” The recent spate of unfounded rumours of a coup, the article maintains, gives the new Left “more heft than it would otherwise have in normal times and contributes greatly to sense of uncertainty as the next transition looms.”
