Dr Othon Anastasakis writes on Greek democracy in crisis

Othon Anastasakis has written an extensive piece on the condition of Greek democracy for CNN's website (1 March).


Analyzing the political effects of the financial bailout, Othon writes that there has been “an unprecedented degree of national humiliation and destabilization of the political system” in Greece, in that Greek parliamentary practices are operating under emergency procedures, constitutional practices are being bypassed, and the role of parliament has been dramatically reduced.

Noting that Greece is gradually losing its middle class, Othon notes the irony that the threat to Greek democracy no longer comes from internal sources but from the very club that was so crucial in helping its consolidation in the past.
